Martin Seligman (born 1942 in New York) is an American Psychologist and Self Help guru. He is known as the father of ‘positive psychology’. But what is it?
Positive psychology focuses on positive emotions, strengths and healthy approaches to life. Seligman researched the impact of positive psychological interventions in treating depressive symptoms, as well as encouraging people to live happier and more fulfilled lives, and experienced encouraging results.
Seligman also coined the term “learned helplessness” as an extension of his interest in positive psychology. His theory is that individuals who suffer adverse affects in a certain situation may feel helpless when faced with that situation again, even if they have control over the outcome.
