Victoria Beckham And Paradise Syndrome

According to those ‘who know her well’, Victoria Beckham is living in perpetual misery. Victoria has everything she ever dreamed of including fame, money a family and a career. She apparently reads copious amounts of self help books and regularly sees a therapist, but still feels that her life is out of control. She knows she has a charmed life, and that she has it so much better than millions of other people, but still feels deeply unsatisfied.

Can you relate to how Victoria Beckham feels? Are you unhappy with life, even though you have everything you’ve ever wanted? Do you have a nice house, children, a loving partner and a dream job but still feel empty inside? If you do then chances are you are suffering from a condition known as ‘Paradise Syndrome’.

The term paradise syndrome is used by cultural commentators to describe a condition where people feel a nagging sense of unhappiness, despite achieving their goals and dreams. Because we live in a narcissistic society where the focus is often on ’me, me, me’, people start to set unrealistic, sky high expectations for themselves that can never be fully satisfied. If they are then the goal posts get moved again to compensate. In effect these individuals can never truly find happiness.

So how can you avoid these feelings? Take some time out to relax each day. During your ‘me time’ sit in a chair with your eyes closed, breathe slowly and deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. Use this time to think about all of the things that you are grateful for.
