At some point in our lives, we will all have to deal with a crisis. We may experience a relationship break up, be made redundant from our job, or have to cope with the death of a loved one. But why do some people seem to cope with these situations better than others? The answer is they have resilience.
If you don’t have resilience, you may become overwhelmed by difficult experiences. Furthermore, You may dwell on the crisis and use unhealthy coping strategies. Although resilience doesn’t stop you from feeling distressed it does give you the strength to cope with a crisis and work towards recovery.
So, why do some people have this ability and not others? Well, for some individual’s, resilience comes naturally as part of their personality type and upbringing. For others it needs to be developed. The good news is that if you don’t have a natural ability to be resilient it can be learned.
Here are some ways to become more resilient:
- Be more assertive in managing your boundaries with other people.
- Increase your self-esteem.
- Develop thought management strategies to cope when a crisis occurs.
- Have a social network in place.
- Make regular time for yourself to be away from your responsibilities.
- Avoid the use of unhealthy ways of coping such as alcohol and caffeine.
- Improve your sleep quality.
